Surgical interventions around the world continue to rise. The resulting scars never go away. They are an ever present reminder of the day of that surgery. Scars also arise from accidents, wounds from wars and conflicts, personal attacks and many other traumas. Scar tissue is often neglected, for a big percentage of the population. The effects of scars is not always understood. The effective treatment of scar tissue is probably the most overlooked and under appreciated skills of the manual therapist.
The effects of scars on the human body be them from trauma or surgery are widespread and could be the cause of dysfunction in areas remote from the site of the scar. The fascial network which runs throughout the body can become restricted as scar tissue inhibits the free-gliding movement of muscles and nerves as they lay within the tissues.
